Fatal Crash with Channelview ISD Band Students on Board
On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, a charter bus plummeted 50 feet down an overpass in Loxley, Alabama in a fatal crash killing the driver and injuring many of the 46 passengers on board.¬† The charter bus was driving back to Texas after a trip the Channelview band took to Disney World for spring break.¬† The company, First Class Tours, and the bus driver‚Äôs estate now have a lawsuit filed against them for $1 Million.¬† The mother of one of the band members filed suit and claims her son has severe head scalping and is continuing to experience post-traumatic stress disorder. ¬†
‚ÄúDefendants betrayed the trust bestowed upon them by over 40 teenage children and members of the Channelview High School Band onboard the charter bus,‚Äù the lawsuit states.
In the fatal crash, the bus driver died from blunt force trauma and a full autopsy is being performed to see if there was any underlying medical issues the diver might have experienced that lead up to the crash.¬† The autopsy has not been released yet.
Its important to note that First Class Tours has been cited multiple times over the years.¬† The fleet of 58 buses has a total of 94 drivers, as reported by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.¬† The FMCSA has issued the company 20 violations in the past few years.¬† There have been multiple citations to the company for unsafe driving violations including excessive speeding as well as drivers not wearing a seatbelt.¬† The bus company has had 4 bus crashes in the last 2 years one being a fatal crash that a bus struck a 71-year-old woman crossing a street in downtown Houston.¬† The driver on in that fatal crash failed to yield the right of way to the elderly woman and her life was tragically taken.¬† First Class Tours has not responded to any questions.¬†
